Coronavirus scare at huge shopping centre as two staff members at Myer test positive for COVID-19

Two staff members at a Melbourne shopping centre have tested positive for COVID-19, sparking fears they could have spread it to customers and colleagues.

Northland Shopping Centre in Preston in Melbourne’s northeast announced the two confirmed cases on Wednesday.

A Myer employee tested positive and last worked at the store on Wednesday, July 22 and a Nike worker who also has the virus last worked on Friday, July 17.

In a statement, Northland Shopping Centre tried to quell fears of infection.

‘We’ve received no advice which indicates there was any risk to our customers or retail team members who visited Myer on 22 July or Nike on 17 July,’ the statement read.

‘All team members who have been identified as having been in close contact with the affected team members have been contacted, will undergo testing and will self-isolate until they receive test results.’

Both the Myer and Nike stores in Northland mall have undertaken a deep clean and sanitisation in line with the  Department of Health and Human Services’ advice.

The latest cases are not the first at the shopping centre as a H&M employee tested positive last month, forcing the store to close down for deep cleaning.

An infectious person also watched Jumanji at the centre’s Hoyts cinema, sparking another COVID scare.

Earlier this month, Northland Shopping Centre began limiting its hours to ‘adjust to the unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19’.

‘The safety and wellbeing of our customers, retailers, team and community continues to be our top priority,’ the centre announced.

‘We’re taking extra precautions to ensure our centre is clean and hygienic every time you visit, including more frequent cleaning, encouraging healthy physical distancing and good hygiene.’

The two confirmed cases at the shopping mall come as Victoria broke the record for its single daily increase in cases, with 723 infections announced on Thursday.

The figure is more than double Wednesday’s 295 infections and far exceeds the state’s previous record of 532 cases on Monday.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced an additional 13 deaths, taking the state’s death toll to 105 and national figure to 189.

More to come.

Disabled people are still vulnerable, even as COVID-19 normalizes their ‘special’ needs

Disabled people are still vulnerable, even as COVID-19 normalizes their ‘special’ needs NewsColony Perhaps it’s appropriate that public notices of the COVID-19 crisis began as an ableist cruelty. Health officials assured the nation that only the elderly and those with chronic health conditions would be seriously affected; most Americans (i.e., the normal people) would have only mild symptoms and be fine. x A friendly reminder: people who will be high-risk patients if we get coronavirus can hear you when you reassure everyone we’re the only ones who might die. — Alexandra Brodsky (@azbrodsky) February 29, 2020 Soon after the announcement of those assurances, the likelihood of high-risk people surviving was further limited by the people more likely to be fine. Shopping frenzies cleared stores of essential supplies needed everyday by many disabled people, like thermometers, hand wipes, masks, and IV infusion supplies. Accustomed to their needs ...
