Dannii Minogue reveals reason why she was able to avoid hotel quarantine and isolate in Gold Coast

Dannii Minogue has revealed the unusual medical reason why she was able to dodge mandatory hotel quarantine – crippling claustrophobia.

The Masked Singer star and her son Ethan, ten, instead spent the 14-day stint inside a private residence in the Gold Coast after arriving from Los Angeles on July 13.

The 48-year-old sparked backlash after it was revealed that she was given a medical exemption, allowing her to avoid hotel quarantine along with the $2,800 bill.

Many labelled the exemption ‘disgusting’, while others claimed it was due to her celebrity ‘privilege’ after another household name, Nicole Kidman, was granted permission to quarantine at her $6.5million Southern Highlands estate.

Since March 28, anyone arriving into Australia has had to undertake a two-week quarantine in hotels to stop coronavirus coming in from abroad.

Ms Minogue has now insisted she wasn’t given any special treatment and said those who judged her ‘didn’t know the facts’.

‘I wouldn’t ask for a “celebrity” treatment or to have anything special granted to,’ she told The Daily Telegraph.

‘I went by the book, I made sure my priority was keeping everyone safe – everyone.’

‘I took a lot of time to pull the whole thing together so that the Queensland Government were happy, the Queensland health officials were happy and that I’m happy. I added extra things into (the COVID-19 safe plan) so I know that I can sleep at night.’ 

Opening up about her claustrophobia last year, the star admitted she could never wear the outfits seen on her show, The Masked Singer.

‘I checked them out but there is no way I could wear any of them,’ she told the Herald Sun.

‘I am the most claustrophobic person. I will have a panic attack sometimes getting in or out of clothing. I have to tell the stylists on shoots so they understand.’

 The singer also took aim at her former employer Channel 7 which originally broke the story, saying the news had been ‘unfairly skewed’. 

She is now looking forward to returning to the Masked Singer which will resume filming in Melbourne on Sunday.

Social media erupted after the news broke that Ms Minogue would not be quarantining in the hotel.

Some claimed it was ‘ridiculous and unfair’ after other travellers had no choice but to fork out $2,800 and isolate away from their homes.

‘Absolutely ridiculous! Dannii Minogue you are not above the law! @ScottMorrisonMP how do you let this happen?’ one outraged citizen tweeted.

Another wrote: ‘This is wrong… Dannii Minogue should have been put in hotel quarantine just like everyone else who comes to Australia is.’ 

‘I love you dearly but think you should not have been given an exemption. Reeks of privilege and favouritism,’ a third commented.

‘Relieved to hear Dannii Minogue was able to avoid hotel quarantine and the $3,800 [sic] bill that comes with it. I’m sure my brother will be treated with the same generosity because right now he’s looking at spending money he doesn’t have to come home,’ someone tweeted.  

Ms Minogue and Ethan reportedly went straight to the property after leaving the airport, and remained there for the duration of their 14-day quarantine.

She also agreed to be tested for coronavirus multiple times during her quarantine.

No one was allowed to visit the property where she was staying.
