The Japanese studio best known for its feature-length anime films, Studio Ghibli, has released many popular movies throughout the years. While many of these films reached great critical acclaim, a handful of them also brought in big bucks at the box office. We’re here to look at the ten highest-grossing Studio Ghibli films now. To do this, we’ll be using the worldwide box office score provided by Box Office Mojo.
It’s time to turn back the clock, head to the theater, and watch the big bucks roll in; here are the ten highest-grossing Studio Ghibli films of all time.
10 When Marnie Was There (2014): $34 Million
The most recent Studio Ghibli to hit theaters was 2014’s When Marnie Was There. This drama follows a quiet 12-year-old girl named Anna who moves in with relatives who live close to a seemingly empty mansion. As it turns out, a young girl named name Marnie resides there.
Though Anna and Marnie become friends, it’s not long before they start to uncover secrets about those they are closest to. The film received strong reviews and over $34 million at the box office.
9 The Cat Returns (2002): $54 Million
This fantasy focuses on a shy high school teen who can speak to cats. After saving the Prince of the Cat Kingdom one day from being hit by a truck, she is invited back to the feline world. However, the longer she stays there, the more she becomes like the creatures she protects. She must work hard to escape the Cat Kingdom and not be trapped forever.
The Cat Returns took home $54 million across its theatrical release.
8 From Up On Poppy Hill (2011): $61 Million
This drama tells of a high school girl who resides inside a boarding house in the ’60s. While living at Coquelicot Manor, she meets a boy who is part of the school’s newspaper club. Together, they plan to get the school’s clubhouse looking new again. Unfortunately, a local businessman and chairman have agendas that compete with their own.
From Up on Poppy Hill was nostalgic and profitable, bringing in $61 million.
7 Tales From Earthsea (2006): $68 Million
Though Tales From Earthsea is one of the lowest-rated movies to be produced by Studio Ghibli, it remains one of the most profitable.
The animated fantasy has the wizard Sparrowhawk attempting to restore balance to the world. To do so, he goes on a journey alongside a runaway prince, a priestess, and the priestess’ daughter in hopes of overcoming the land’s evil.
6 The Wind Rises (2013): $136 Million
Based on the life of Jiro Horikoshi, The Wind Rises follows the Japanese aviation engineer’s journey through existence. Though the story begins with Jiro wishing to become a pilot in 1918, it ends with Jiro reflecting on the results of World War II in the mid-1940s.
The film featured a bittersweet story and rich animations that left critics applauding. It earned over $136 million.
5 The Secret World Of Arrietty (2010): $149 Million
The Secret World of Arriety has the titular tiny teen living inside the walls and floors of a suburban home. Though Arriety is told to stay quiet, she ends up befriending the 12-year-old Shawn who lives there. Unfortunately, this relationship ends up putting her family in danger.
Arrietty brought in $149 million and a load of positive reviews.
4 Princess Mononoke (1997): $162 Million
The only ’90s film to make this list is the fantasy film Princess Mononoke. It scored $162 million at the box office.
Set during the Muromachi period in Japan, the narrative centers on a young Emishi prince who gets intertwined in the conflict between the forest gods and the humans that continually use the land.
3 Ponyo (2008): $203 Million
Young Sosuke meets a goldfish princess known as Ponyo in the movie of the same name. Ponyo hopes to become human, and as she grows closer to Sosuke, her dreams start to turn true.
Unfortunately, Ponyo’s father has an agenda of his own, and while trying to escape her sea fate, the princess spills potions that could endanger Sosuke’s town. Ponyo’s sweet story fished out $203 million during its theatrical release.
2 Howl’s Moving Castle (2004): $236 Million
In Howl’s Moving Castle, young Sophie becomes friends with a wizard named Howl while working at her father’s hat shop. Sophie’s life gets turned upside down, however, after the villainous Witch of Waste tries to halt the relationship by turning her into an old woman. It’s up to Howl to help Sophie become young yet again.
The 2004 fantasy blended a complex story and magical illustrations that had it easily bringing in $236 million.
1 Spirited Away (2001): $347 Million
The highest-grossing Studio Ghibli film also happens to be the most critically acclaimed. Spirited Away follows 10-year-old Chihiro’s journey to turn her parents human again after they are transformed into pigs at an empty amusement park. Along the way, she meets the strange Haku who informs her that their souls are currently at rest.
In addition to reigning in acclaim for its beautifully hand-drawn animations and enchanting tale, the fantasy left theaters with $347 million.
