A twisted bank worker who sadistically tortured a 21-year-old woman for 23 days, lit her on fire and left her for dead, has been jailed for life.

Nicholas John Crilley, 34, was sentenced by Queensland District Court Judge Anthony Rafter SC on Friday morning, about three years after his arrest.

The former Commonwealth Bank employee and amateur footballer left his young victim permanently disfigured over the course of June and July 2017. 

‘Your brutality took her to the edge of death,’ Judge Rafter said.  

To his friends, Nicholas John Crilley, 34, was an amateur football player and bank worker – but court documents unearthed by Daily Mail Australia reveal he had a history of violence against women and was in the sights of Queensland Police over drug-related activities

Crown Prosecutor Sandra Cupina told his sentencing hearing last week that Crilley had subjected the 21-year-old victim to ‘unimaginable horror’.

The victim – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was found by paramedics on clinging to life in July 2017.

Police who arrived on the scene thought she had been the victim of an explosion. She had suffered burns to 46 per cent of her body as a result of Crilley’s actions.

Over the course of his depraved treatment – breaking her teeth and pouring burning liquid in her eyes – he boasted to a friend he had ‘pummeled her so hard… she can’t talk anymore’. 

The court heard he had told the victim he planned to ‘disfigure her face’ and break her jaw but he instead left her clinging to life.

Crown Prosecutor Sandra Cupina told Crilley’s sentencing hearing last week tha he had subjected the woman to ‘severe physical, psychological and sadistic violence’. 

‘As (the woman) became more injured, (Crilley) increased the methods he was using to harm her.

‘First the boiling water, then the acetone, then setting her on fire.

‘The horror (she) would have been experiencing is almost unimaginable,’ she said.

He had only recently walked free from prison for a separate gutless assault on a woman at McDonalds in 2014. 

During that incident, he violently grabbed an unidentified woman by the wrist and threw food in her face, court documents said. 

The fight began when Crilley ‘made unwanted verbal advances’ to the woman – who was with her boyfriend – before he abused the pair and assaulted the victim. 

He was sentenced to 100 hours of community service but was hauled back to court a year later, on September 1, 2015, for failing to finish his service. 

Crilley was jailed for six months, with a non-parole period of two months, but appealed, claiming his imprisonment was ‘manifestly excessive’. He never showed up at court to fight it. 

Months later, Queensland Police took Crilley to the state’s Supreme Court in order to seize drug utensils and $1,365 in proceeds of crime.     

He was ordered to surrender a set of scales, a glass pipe and a velvet bag on the grounds it was connected to possessing a dangerous drug.  

 

Some former friends were stunned by Crilley’s crimes after he pleaded guilty to 54 charges earlier this year. One said in a social media post this week: ‘What did I just read about NJ Crillz?

Some of her injuries were badly infected and became infested with maggots. 

Defence lawyer Malcolm Harrison told the court Crilley was in a methylamphetamine-induced delusional state during the prolonged assault.

He said Crilley believed the woman had been part of a drive-by shooting that targeted him, but that was not based on reality.

‘This is a dreadful and extremely serious example of violence against a woman,’ he said. 

Even Crilley’s lawyer admitted: ‘The offences were sadistic in nature.’

In a statement to the court, Crilley’s victim said: ‘I have been disfigured both mentally and physically. 

‘It is something I would not wish on my worst enemies.’

She said people now look at her as a ‘monster’ because of her ‘horrific, very visible and predominantly irreversible’ injuries.

‘Every time I leave my home I am stared at,’ she said. 

‘I do not see myself walking down an aisle and fulfilling a woman’s dream of being married in a white gown to a man she loves.’

The victim risks going blind due to her injuries and suffers post-traumatic stress order.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, ‘has gone from a confident, happy go lucky, strong, independent, self-funded woman, to a woman that has absolutely nothing’, a close friend said.

Close friend Linden Hill has raised more than $14,000 for the victim on GoFundMe. She said the victim faces a lifetime of health issues – including suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, nightmares, body tremors, skin grafts, laser treatment, reconstructive surgery and the possibility of going blind. 

Even her car was taken from her by Crilley – written off during a high-speed police pursuit, eight days after the victim was found by police and paramedics and in such a bad state they thought she was dead.

‘She has medical bills that are adding up (medications that aren’t covered) plus the loss of her car due to the maggot using it in the high-speed police chase and it was written off,’ Ms Hill wrote.

‘She now has to catch public transport to her hospital, psychologist, DVAC (domestic violence support) appointments and as I’m sure you’re all aware this puts more strain on her.’

The District Court heard horrifying details of how the victim was imprisoned at Crilley’s townhouse where she was forced to sleep outside or on the floor for much of the 23-day ordeal. 

The court has heard he poured burning liquids into her eyes and broke her teeth during endless beatings. She has to wear a wig after losing chunks of hair, thanks to a badly burned scalp.
