World needs to know about China origins of virus, says Scott Morrison

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has dismissed comparisons by Captain Cook’s arrival on Australian shores to the unwelcome spread of the coronavirus.

The link was made by Victoria’s Deputy Chief Health Officer on social media overnight, sparking outrage and calls for her resignation.

“Sudden arrival of an invader from another land, decimating populations, creating terror,” Annaliese van Diemen said on Twitter.

“Forces the population to make enormous sacrifices & completely change how they live in order to survive. COVID19 or Cook 1770?”

Speaking on 2GB this morning, the prime minister said Dr van Diemen should “stick to her day job”.

“I found these comments very disappointing,” Mr Morrison told Alan Jones.

“She clearly won’t the job as chief historian.

“Those sorts of comments don’t inspire confidence, people should stick to their day jobs.”

Mr Morrison said there was a trend of “people expressing opinions on things they are not experts on”, especially via social media.

“But the ones that matter are the ones where people have that expertise and experience,” he added.

“Cook was an amazing navigational scientist and his role in our country’s history is incredible.

“We shouldn’t be ashamed of our history but we should tell it openly and honestly.”

It is the first time that a vaccine candidate for Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has been authorised for use for the military of any nation. CanSino said on Monday that the candidate had been through two phases of clinical trials, which indicated it was safe and there was “relatively high” immune response to the antigen. The candidate is yet to start ...
