Coronavirus cluster erupts at Melbourne aged care facility

A new coronavirus cluster at an aged care facility in Melbourne’s inner-east is under investigation by health authorities.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton revealed on 3AW today an outbreak had occurred at aged care facility Hawthorn Grange.

“There’s a cluster at an aged care facility we’re investigating at the moment,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“There might be more cases [which] emerge.”

Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan said the facility’s infection figures had not yet been confirmed.

But it is understood there were three new cases of COVID-19 at the facility, including two residents and a staff member.

“I understand there has been a cluster that has been identified at an eastern suburbs aged car facility,” Mr Donnellan said at a press conference.

“We don’t have the numbers presently that’s why we are undertaking the investigation. We are providing support to that facility.”

It comes as Victoria has recorded seven new cases of coronavirus, the highest number of COVID-19 cases in more than a week.

The new cases takes the state’s COVID-19 total to 1361.

The total number of cases is made up of 704 men and 657 women, with people aged from babies to their early nineties.

There are 140 confirmed cases of coronavirus that may have been acquired through community transmission. Currently 18 people are in hospital, including nine patients in intensive care.

The state’s death toll remains at 18.

“Our daily case numbers are still low which is encouraging,” Prof. Sutton said.

“They prove that our physical distancing measures are working but this is not a time to relax our strong approach – this disease can get away from you very quickly as we have seen overseas.”
