Sydney constable told to self-isolate after visiting returned traveller in mandatory quarantine

An on-duty police officer has been forced to self-isolate after visiting a male returned traveller during their stint in hotel quarantine.

The constable entered the Sydney hotel room in the early hours of Friday morning, with officers at the Police Operations Centre attached to Operation Corona Virus being alerted at 3am.

The male occupant of the room had only just returned from overseas and was staying at the hotel as part of their 14-day mandatory quarantine.

The police officer left the room and remained at the hotel for a short time.

They then returned to a police station where they completed their shift.

The constable and a close contact have been ordered to get tested for COVID-19 and self-isolate in the meantime.

The occupant of the hotel room had been tested for COVID-19 before returning to Australia.

Although the test result came back negative, he will be given another COVID-19 test.

New South Wales Police have since launched an investigation into the constable and the unexplained behaviour.

Travellers returning from overseas or Victoria are required to remain in quarantine for 14 days.

They are tested for COVID-19 at the airport before they are transported to pre-arranged accommodation.

Anyone who breaks quarantine rules risks an $11,000 fine or six months imprisonment.
