Why the Korean beauty trend for ‘slugging’ is taking the internet by storm

A new trend has emerged among beauty lovers for slathering their faces in Vaseline or thick petroleum jelly and leaving it on overnight in a bid to wake up with glowing skin.

The Korean trend, dubbed ‘slugging’, coats the face in a thick layer which imitates the slick, slimy trails left behind by a typical garden slug.

The user typically wakes up with a glowing complexion and the skin appearing smoother and softer.

Those who have tried the trend have detailed their great experiences on Reddit and TikTok.

One particular woman said she is ‘never going back’ to her old skincare regime.

‘My face was sticky going to bed. I looked like a snail,’ she recalled.

‘I woke up the next morning, and my face has never been so soft. I am reborn. I am a new woman.

‘I was not a slug; I was a caterpillar in the cocoon. I’ve emerged, a beautiful butterfly. No new breakouts. My skin is smooth and happy and bouncy: everything it should be and never was.’

Thousands of other fans have emerged online to say they will never forego slugging in future.

‘I’ve been using Vaseline for two days now and my face is another level of soft,’ one woman wrote.

The reason why the trend works is because Vaseline's main ingredient, petrolatum, is called an 'occlusive' ingredient, which means it acts to minimise the evaporation of water from the skin

The reason why the trend works is because Vaseline’s main ingredient, petrolatum, is called an ‘occlusive’ ingredient.

This means it acts to minimise the evaporation of water from the skin.

‘Petrolatum also has some emollient properties, meaning that it can fill the gaps between the dry outermost skin cells and stimulate the production of the skin’s own lipid-making machinery, making the skin’s surface appear smoother and feel softer,’ skin scientist Dr Michelle Squire told Beauty Crew.

‘It can reduce transepidermal water loss by 99 per cent making it THE most effective moisturiser available.’

She added: ‘It can be used by those with even the most sensitive and irritated skin, including those starting out on prescription retinoids, which is where we most often recommend it.’

Those wanting to try 'slugging' for themselves should first of all cleanse their face and remove any makeup and eye makeup, before adding a hydrating mist and then the Vaseline

Once this is done, you can layer a hydrating facial mist or serum underneath the Vaseline, which will help to ‘lock in’ the moisture for extra hydration.

Then, add a thick coat of Vaseline and go to sleep, while the magic works.

If you are acne-prone, you might want to steer clear of the trend, as petrolatum is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn’t penetrate the pores and can trap dead skin cells or oil and potentially clog your pores.

It is the first time that a vaccine candidate for Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has been authorised for use for the military of any nation.
