A man has tragically been killed in a shark attack at a popular beach in Western Australia

The swimmer was attacked on Cable Beach in Broome, on the northwest coast of Western Australia, at about 8.45am on Sunday morning.

It is understood the swimmer was attacked north of the Cable Beach rocks and lost his hand in the attack, The West Australian reported.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development was also notified of the incident.

The DPIRD said it was investigating and working with local authorities to coordinate responses.

‘Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA,’ a DPIRD statement said.
