Woman arrested after making naked video on sacred Indian bridge

A woman has been arrested after allegedly making a video of herself naked on a sacred bridge in Northern India.

The 27-year-old French woman, only identified as Marie-Helene, will face charges under internet law after posting footage of herself on the Lakshman Jhula in the city of Rishikesh.

The bridge is popular with backpackers and yoga practitioners.

It is alleged the woman shared her video from the bridge on social media. (Getty)

“She told us she sells bead necklaces online and the shoot was aimed at promoting her business,” local police station chief RK Saklani said.

“During the questioning, she accepted to have shot the video in [the] nude but claimed she was not aware that it’s illegal in India,” another police official told the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times.

“She said the video and the photoshoot was intended to promote her bead-necklace business.”

But in statement to AFP, the woman said her actions were to stand up for oppressed Indian women and fellow female travellers.
“I chose to partially uncover on Lakshman Jhula because each time I crossed the bridge I felt I was being harassed… My Indian sisters and fellow female travellers surely have experienced the same,” she wrote in the statement.

Police arrested the woman last Thursday and released her on bail. Her mobile phone was seized as part of the investigation which is ongoing. Officers made the arrest after being tipped off about the video being posted on social media.

Lakshman Jhula is a nearly a century-old suspension footbridge over the river Ganga. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its association with Hindu mythology. It was first opened for public in 1929.

In her statement the woman apologised for hurting the local community with her actions.

“I was lacking awareness on cultural specificities,” she said.

The woman could face up to three years jail if convicted.
