A second insider close to the former footballer told Daily Star: “There is definitely a good chance of him signing up.

“He has certainly shown interest. He loves the show and knows it would be a lot of fun to be a contestant.”

Mark played for Liverpool and other teams throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and was also an international player for Republic of Ireland.

He also managed teams before going on to become a radio and TV pundit for the sport.

Other names rumoured to be in discussion for the upcoming series include Christine McGuinness and Jamie Laing, who was forced to pull out in 2019 days before it launched after an injury.

A telly source said: “Jamie was devastated when he couldn’t carry on because of his nasty foot injury.

“He went through a lot of physiotherapy to get well again and now he’s completely recovered.

“Jamie has been in contact with the BBC and has confirmed he’s fighting fit and that he’s more than able to take part in the next series.”

The source added: “Having a place on TV’s most prestigious dancing show, then having it taken away through something that was no fault of his own was a bitter pill to swallow.

“Knowing he can come back and give it another shot has made him really excited.”

While Jamie’s downfall was hard for him to stomach, it went on to work out for the best for his replacement Kelvin Fletcher.

The ex-Emmerdale actor went on to win the show with his partner Oti Mabuse.

The Sun Online has contacted reps for Strictly for comment.
