They have been at villages, fumigating and ensuring social distancing along with home quarantines

The pandemic’s circumstances cannot afford the work from home option to all — the list includes a few government officials who have been working round the clock for citizens’ safety. Zilla Parishad (ZP) is well aware of its employees’ efforts that has held the ground so far. It has now conferred with them the ultimate protective gear; a life insurance worth Rs 1 crore for those who have been on the frontline.

The lot that has been insured includes Asha workers, health officers, medical officers, taluka health officers, gram sevaks and group development officers.

ZP’s chief executive officer (CEO) Ayush Prasad has said that the insurance cover was announced to bolster a “sense of security” among its employees.

Prasad told Mirror, “The insurance cover aims to guard the frontline officers’ mental peace and is also a testimony to their hard work.”

These officers have been going door-todoor, disseminating awareness about preventive measures. Then, there are the health officials who are working 24 hours to screen the situation in villages. Apart from the insurance cover, these officials have also been secured by providing them with safety gears.

The decision of the insurance cover has been embraced by the officials — the initiative attending its intended effort.

Shrikant Vhaval, a gram sevak working in Shirur, said, “We have been tasked with many responsibilities like fumigation, ensuring social distancing, checking on home-quarantined people, co-ordinating with Asha workers and so on. With so many duties on hand, this life cover has imparted a sense of relief for all of us who are working on the ground. If anything unfortunate happens to us, at least our family will be covered.”

Eknath Dhakane, president of statewide association of gram sevaks echoed Vhaval’s views. As he appreciated ZP’s decision, he wants such an initiative (of insurance cover) to be implemented across the state. “That way, all the government officials working under Zilla Parishad will feel be benefitted,” he said.

Disabled people are still vulnerable, even as COVID-19 normalizes their ‘special’ needs NewsColony Perhaps it’s appropriate that public notices of the COVID-19 crisis began as an ableist cruelty. Health officials assured the nation that only the elderly and those with chronic health conditions would be seriously affected; most Americans (i.e., the normal people) would have only mild symptoms and be fine. x A friendly reminder: people who will be high-risk patients if we get coronavirus can hear you when you reassure everyone we’re the only ones who might die. — Alexandra Brodsky (@azbrodsky) February 29, 2020 Soon after the announcement of those assurances, the likelihood of high-risk people surviving was further limited by the people more likely to be fine. Shopping frenzies cleared stores of essential supplies needed everyday by many disabled people, like thermometers, hand wipes, masks, and IV infusion supplies. Accustomed to their needs ...
