A BOWLS club is to let women become full members for the first time in its 96-year history.
Ilkley Bowling Club said “the world had moved on” since it was founded in 1924.
At the moment, women can enter the main bar area only as guests of male members.
As associate members, they can drink only on weekdays after 5pm and at weekends.
They can buy drinks from the bar during matches but must consume them outside.
But members of the West Yorks crown green bowls club have now voted 377 to 129 in favour of giving both sexes equal access.
Club chairman Alan Breese said: “The whole of the committee is delighted with the result and it helps us plan better for the future.
“We are still one club and even though people voted against it, I don’t want to alienate anyone. We go forward as one club.”
Priority for full membership will now go to the 500 women who have associate status — mainly team members and members’ spouses.
They will be able to apply to the club from July 1 but will have to wait until April next year for approval.
Club secretary Richard Bell said: “We last held a vote seven years ago. Since then the world has changed and the club has changed, too.”
Member Peter Mate said: “It’s a good facility that needs to be brought into the present day.”
