Boots ‘launch first private shoplifting prosecution’ after police let repeat-offender go scot-free

BOOTS has backed what is thought to be a first private shoplifting prosecution.
Bosses are fed-up with repeat offenders getting off scot-free due to a lack of police action.
And they are set to support more court cases against thieves who target their stores.
The case against a serial offender was launched by TM Eye, parent company of My Local Bobby — which provides security officers to Boots.
Nicholas Richards was held by an MLB officer after being spotted on CCTV trying to pinch £170 of Gucci perfume.
‘STAFF ARE DEMORALISED AND SCARED’
The officer was wearing a body camera.
Its microphone recorded a PC called to the scene letting the thief go after telling him: “Don’t do any silly s*** — I don’t want to see you again.”
Richards replies: “Thank you. Apologies.”
The decision angered staff at Boots’ flagship branch in Piccadilly, central London.
A manager said: “We are currently suffering eight to 12 offences per day.
“As a consequence of the level of thefts and occasional violence, my staff are demoralised and scared.
“Some have resigned and others have asked not to work late all because of these problems.”
Richards admitted shoplifting. He has 18 previous similar convictions and will be sentenced later.
