ART thieves stole three paintings worth millions of pounds — including a 400-year-old Van Dyck.

They are thought to have dropped through a roof to evade hi-tech alarms.

Cops are probing the raid at Christ Church, Oxford University, at 11pm on Saturday.

Sir Anthony van Dyck’s A Soldier on Horseback, dating to 1616, was snatched.

A similar work by the Flemish master sold for £2.6million in 2018. Raiders also nicked A Boy Drinking (1580) by Annibale Carracci, and A Rocky Coast, With Soldiers Studying a Plan (1640s) by Salvator Rosa. Both artists were Italian.

Det Chief Insp Jon Capps said: “These are very high value pieces.

“A thorough investigation is under way.”

Cops set up a forensics tent on the roof.

The gallery has closed until further notice.

Police are not linking the thefts to that of a gold toilet from Blenheim Palace, Oxon, last year.
