The death toll from the coronavirus – or Covid 19 as it’s officially called – has now reached 104 and infections 2,226, prompting the Prime Minister to announced schools are to close.

Sweeping new powers are also being looked at to keep people at home, as the armed forces are set to deploy in a bid to help the nation manage the escalating crisis.

The Covid Support Force is made up made up of 10,000 military personnel who are regularly deployed to civilian activities, plus an extra 10,000 in response.

Major General Charlie Stickland, Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff Operations and Commitments, said the force “will form part of a whole force effort to support the country during its time of need”.

The force been placed at high readiness and could expand its role into more specialised roles aimed at helping the NHS.

Scientists from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory are supporting Public Health England’s effort to understand the virus and tackle the spread.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “The men and women of our Armed Forces stand ready to protect Britain and her citizens from all threats, including Covid-19.

“The unique flexibility and dedication of the services means that we are able to provide assistance across the whole of society in this time of need.

“From me downwards the entirety of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces are dedicated to getting the nation through this global pandemic.”

Soldiers and councils are also being prepared to work with people suffering distress during self-isolation, amid official concern over the toll it could take on the mental health those already facing challenging circumstances, the Telegraph reports.

It emerged last night that new sweeping measures could include halting the tubes, and stopping all trains from entering the city after many Londoners continued to pack into the crowded tubes.

Already dozens of Tube stations will begin a partial shutdown from Thursday.

Pubs, restaurants and even all but food shops and chemists could be ordered to shut, and in one extreme scenario all but essential workers could be asked to stay at home all day.

The orders will leave London – where contagion is spreading faster – on the same emergency footing as Paris, Brussels and Milan where most people are largely confined to their homes.

In a dressing down to some Londoners who have flouted his appeal to avoid all unnecessary social contract, the PM reminded them that “everyone must follow the advice”

NewsColony Volunteers book hotel room for homeless man with SingapoRediscovers vouchers © The Independent Singapore Singapore — A group of volunteers from the Mummy Yummy Singapore welfare organisation donated their SingapoRediscovers Vouchers to book a hotel room for a homeless man. The man, who was identified as Jayden, did not have a place to live while waiting for the Housing Board (HDB) to allocate him a rental flat. In a Facebook post on Mummy Yummy Singapore’s page on Wednesday (Dec 16), the volunteers said: “We used our $100 Rediscover Singapore vouchers to redeem hotel stay for him and successfully booked 9 days worth of stay at 3 days per voucher.” They added that they were unable to book a longer stay because of higher hotel rates over Christmas and New Year. The volunteers hoped that they would be able to bridge Jayden’s stay until he got a flat. “Thanks our government for giving us these vouchers which in return we can put them to good use for people in need,” th...

Disabled people are still vulnerable, even as COVID-19 normalizes their ‘special’ needs

Disabled people are still vulnerable, even as COVID-19 normalizes their ‘special’ needs NewsColony Perhaps it’s appropriate that public notices of the COVID-19 crisis began as an ableist cruelty. Health officials assured the nation that only the elderly and those with chronic health conditions would be seriously affected; most Americans (i.e., the normal people) would have only mild symptoms and be fine. x A friendly reminder: people who will be high-risk patients if we get coronavirus can hear you when you reassure everyone we’re the only ones who might die. â€Â” Alexandra Brodsky (@azbrodsky) February 29, 2020 Soon after the announcement of those assurances, the likelihood of high-risk people surviving was further limited by the people more likely to be fine. Shopping frenzies cleared stores of essential supplies needed everyday by many disabled people, like thermometers, hand wipes, masks, and IV infusion supplies. Accustomed to their needs ...

JANE FRYER: The judo master who made me the fall guy… aged 97!

NewsColony JANE FRYER: The judo master who made me the fall guy… aged 97! Jane Fryer is pictured above with Jack Hearn. ‘See, I’d get you round the neck and press on your Adam’s apple,’ he grins, silver moustache bobbing, white teeth flashing. ‘ And if I carried on with that, you’d be dead in a minute’ There is a startling moment in Jack Hearn’s extremely spick and span kitchen, when I’m standing between his trophy table and the wall and he’s telling me how he could finish me off with his huge, bearlike paws. ‘See, I’d get you round the neck and press on your Adam’s apple,’ he grins, silver moustache bobbing, white teeth flashing. ‘ And if I carried on with that, you’d be dead in a minute.’ We have already had a lively discussion about whether he should, or should not, throw me over one of his surprisingly wide shoulders on to his beautifully vacuumed living room floor. ‘I could throw you, of course I could! But I won’t,’ he says.  ‘It’s not fair — you don’t know...
