Britain needs ‘far more ventilators’ despite Government efforts to ramp up supply. 

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said there was ‘a huge national effort to equip ourselves’ as firms such as Airbus, McLaren and Nissan work to find a way to create thousands of new machines. 

He said: ‘We have, we think, a good supply at the moment but we need to get far more.’

The UK has 8,175 ventilators – half the number per head as Italy where 4,825 deaths have been recorded. 

The machines are a key piece of kit in treating the most severe cases of coronavirus, where patients experience such severe symptoms they need help breathing. 

Industry has been asked to deliver 5,000 ventilators within a month and a total of 30,000 by ramping up production of existing models or designing a new version that is easy-to-replicate. 

The Government hopes production will begin next week.
