Donald Sutherland’s sprawling New York City apartment in The Undoing is mix of two multimillion dollar Central Park facing homes and a specially built set in Queens. 

Brisbane House at 1215 Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side serves as the exterior for the home owned by Sutherland’s character Franklin Reinhart; but the interior shots were taken at 1107 Fifth Avenue and the studio, according to dirt.com.   

Viewers in the US finally discovered who killed Elena Alves Sunday night during the gripping finale of The Undoing, which has captivated audiences across the globe.

Filmed on location, the show’s backdrop of New York City proved to be the perfect showcase for Franklin’s wealth as his daughter Grace, played by Nicole Kidman, fought to uncover the truth about the gruesome murder.

Brisbane House’s lobby, where homes sell for $3.5million, was also used by the show’s creators. Police waited there to question Grace about the murder in scenes from the show. 

For the interior, 1107 Fifth provided the backdrop for Franklin’s balcony, dining room, bedroom and living room. It exterior also served as the entrance to Grace’s therapy office.

The blue great room, where Grace and Franklin played chess and piano during scenes, was a specially made set built at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens. The bedrooms for Grace and her son Henry (played by Noah Jupe) were also constructed there. 

Production designer Lester Cohen said of that set: ‘In addition, we constructed some hallways that matched the existing location in order to create believable transitions as characters moved from one part of the apartment on location, into another part of the apartment on the studio set.’ 

In the final moments of the episode it emerged that Jonathan had actually murdered Elena (Matilda De Angelis), the mother of his illegitimate daughter, in a brutal attack in her New York art studio that fateful night. 

That studio is in Harlem at 181 Lenox Avenue at 119th Street; De Angelis’ character Elena lives with her family in 102 E. 103rd Street. 

The David E. Kelley-created series, which stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, was the most watched night of viewing for an HBO original series since the season 2 finale of the previous Kelley-Kidman collaboration, Big Little Lies. Three million viewers tuned in, per Deadline.

Director Susanne Bier told Architectural Digest of Franklin’s home: ‘It’s intentionally austere and has a dignified sense of style.’

She told Vulture: ‘My initial thought was capturing the experience of walking in Central Park and looking at those apartments and wondering what it’s like.’

Grace and Jonathan Fraser’s home: A five-story, nine-bedroom townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, built in 1878 that’s on the market for $29,995,000

As for Nicole Kidman’s character Grace, her fictional townhouse is on the real estate market.

The Upper East Side brownstone, situated between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue near Central Park, serves as the exterior for the home owned by Kidman’s character Grace Fraser and her husband Jonathan, who is played by Hugh Grant.

The property is located at 8 East 63rd Street, the same address the Frasers give in the crime drama; interior scenes were also shot there, Vanity Fair reports, but the style is different to those seen on the show.

On screen, the Frasers’ home is dark and moody with lilac walls and a trendy exposed brick kitchen. But in reality the five-story home at 8 East 63rd Street is bright and airy, complete with large windows, high ceilings and a neutral color scheme.

The stunning property is on sale with Sotheby’s International Realty for an eye-watering $29,995,000.  

As for the school Grace and Jonathon’s son Henry attends, that is the fiction Reardon which uses Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church located at 75 E. 93rd Street as a backdrop; it’s the same set used by Gossip Girl.
