Dr Fauci recommends that Trump ‘ultimately’ get vaccinated

Dr Anthony Fauci has said that President Trump ultimately ‘might want to get vaccinated,’ as he praised Mike Pence and the surgeon general, Jerome Adams, for opting to be injected live on television.

Fauci, speaking on CNN on Friday night, said he thought it would be a good idea for Trump to get the vaccination.

Being infected does not mean that you are guaranteed immunity.

But Fauci said that, given Trump was recently infected – his diagnosis was confirmed on October 1 – he may still have a high level of antibodies.

‘That’s a personal choice between the president and his physicians,’ said Fauci.

He said that the president ‘might still have a high level of antibody in his system, so you might want to wait a bit before you actually vaccinate him.’

He thought that it was advisable for the president to get vaccinated, however.

‘I had recommended publicly that both he and Vice President Pence ultimately get vaccinated,’ he said.

‘And as you know, the vice president got vaccinated today publicly, which is really good.

‘I like that example, not only of the vice president but also the Surgeon General Adams to get that.

‘I think that was a good thing, representing to the community, to the people watching, that this is something we ought to do because if we get the majority of the people in this country vaccinated we’re going to turn this round for sure.’

On Wednesday a White House official told CNN that Trump would not be vaccinated until his doctors told him to.

The official said the president continues to be open to getting vaccinated, but that he also wants to make sure frontline medical workers receive the vaccine first.

Joe Biden is expected to get his first COVID-19 vaccination early next week, likely Monday, and plans to get his shot in public.

‘I don’t want to get ahead of the line, but I want to make sure we demonstrate to the American people that it is safe to take,’ Biden told reporters on Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware.

‘When I do it, I’ll do it publicly, so you can all witness my getting it done,’ Biden said.

Biden told CNN earlier this month that he would ‘be happy to’ get publicly vaccinated, as three of his presidential predecessors – Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama – said they would as a way to demonstrate its safety and efficacy.
