Rare illness linked to COVID-19 found in children

A rare inflammatory illness could be linked to coronavirus in children, with dozens of cases reported in the US.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed a five-year-old boy had died from the rare condition which exhibits similar symptoms to Kawasaki disease.

The boy died from a toxic shock-like syndrome after he was admitted to hospital with respiratory illness caused by coronavirus.

“While rare, we are seeing some cases where children affected with the COVID-19 virus can become ill with symptoms similar to the Kawasaki disease or toxic shock-like syndrome that literally causes inflammation in their blood vessels,” Governor Cuomo said.

Cases of children presenting similar symptoms after exposure to COVID-19 were first reported in Britain, Italy and Spain, and now doctors in the US are reporting similar clusters.

Scientists are still determining whether the syndrome is linked to a new strain of coronavirus as not all children have tested positive for it.

Symptoms include fever, skin rashes, swollen glands and in extreme cases inflammation of the arteries around the heart.
